Pittsburgh, May 2, 2024 -- Michael T. Lawton, MD, the Robert F. Spetzler Endowed Chair for Neurosciences and chair of neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Ariz., presented a talk on "Seven Bypasses" at the 6th Annual Peter J. Jannetta Lectureship, held May 1 at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery
Dr. Lawton—also president and chief executive officer, as well as chief of vascular and skull base neurosurgery at Barrow—presented a second talk "Skiing and the Art of Cavernoma Surgery" at a special evening reception and dinner held in his honor at the Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh.
The Peter J. Jannetta Lecture—focusing on innovations in the field of neurosurgery—is held annually in honor of the former chair of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Jannetta was world-renown for his development of microvascular decompression (MVD), an innovative procedure that moved blood vessels away from the trigeminal nerve, alleviating chronic pain and spasms in facial muscles. The procedure became commonly known as the "Jannetta Procedure" around the world and brought relief to thousands.
