New Clinical Trial Targets Meningiomas and Recurrent Malignant Gliomas

Pittsburgh, September 13, 2000 -- The Brain Tumor Center announces opening of a new clinical trial for patients with recurrent meningioma or high-grade gliomas (glioblastomas and anaplastic astrocytomas). Patients who have recurrent or progressive tumor following surgery and radiation are eligible.

The trial studies a medicine called SU5416 that blocks the growth of new blood vessels. Growth of new blood vessels, also known as angiogenesis, is thought to be essential for tumor growth. The trial is funded and sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the North American Brain Tumor Consortium.
