Our Goal

Project Overview

Endowed chairs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine provide a unique source of support to individuals who have achieved national prominence relative to patient care, investigative research, and teaching. Each endowed chair helps to provide support for that faculty member who is recommended for the honor by the department chair and confirmed by the executive committee of the School of Medicine. Formal endowment of the chair occurs at the time the University Provost presents the honoree with a specially crafted endowment medal, after which an inaugural lecture is delivered.

Currently, the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh has four fully endowed professorships in neurological surgery. Each endowed chair confers special recognition to the holder of the chair and also provides special honor to the sources of the endowment itself. Other endowed chairs at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery include the Lars Leksell Chair, The Walter Dandy Chair, The Peter J. Jannetta Chair, and the Children's Neurosurgery Chair.

Revenue from a fully endowed chair ($1.5 million) provides annual benefit to the holder of the chair by facilitating his or her work within the department. Current holders of endowed chairs in the department have achieved national and international recognition for their clinical, research and teaching abilities.

The Peter E. Sheptak endowed chair in neurological surgery will provide recognition of the contributions of a talented and unique individual.
