First awarded in 1953, the annual award is the university's highest accolade reserved solely for its alumni. The award is bestowed on alumni who have excelled in their field and who have contributed significantly to their community, state, nation or university.

A 1965 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Maroon is widely regarded as a premiere specialist in the surgical treatment of injuries and diseases of the brain and spine and has been honored as one of America’s best neurosurgeons for 12 consecutive years.

A leading expert in sports and health medicine, Dr. Maroon has made significant contributions concerning the diagnosis and treatment of concussions and post-concussion syndrome. His efforts have had a major positive impact on generations of athletes confronting neurological issues.

Other 2011 recipients are David H. Jacobs, Jr; retired General Victor E. Renuart Jr; Vice Admiral Adam M. Robinson, Jr; and Sue H. Talbot.

Indiana University president Michael A. McRobbie will present the awards to the five honorees on November 4 in Bloomington, Indiana.
