Michelle Acosta, DPAS, PA-C is currently the director of advanced practice at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery, a position she took on in February 2024. In this position, she is responsible for overseeing the integration and coordination of advanced practice providers across multiple University of Pittsburgh hospitals, including UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Mercy, UPMC Passavant, and UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Michelle's broad expertise is bolstered by over a decade of experience in neurology, neurosurgery and neurocritical care.
Michelle has a strong passion for managing complex neurosurgical patients, including those with intricate cranial, skull base and neurovascular pathologies. She has also enjoyed caring for patients with complex spine, traumatic, functional and oncological neurosurgical needs. This extensive clinical experience has been pivotal in honing her expertise in the field.
In addition to her clinical pursuits, Michelle is deeply passionate about administration, leadership, and advocating for the development and growth of the Physician Assistant profession. Her doctoral titled, "Post-Professional Education of Practicing Physician Assistants," focused on the educational experiences of her peers and has equipped her with unique insights and methodologies to enhance the training and professional growth of APPs.
Michelle holds a Doctorate in Physician Assistant Science from the University of Pittsburgh, obtained in April 2023, and a Master of Physician Assistant Science from Saint Francis University, achieved in 2014. She also earned a Bachelor of Science in Health science with minors in genetics and world cultures and language from Saint Francis University in 2013.
