The flagship hospital for the Department of Neurological Surgery is UPMC Presbyterian, an 800-bed level 1, fully accredited regional trauma center located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Construction is now underway on a new hospital located directly adjacent to the existing structure. The new 17-story, 900,000 square foot structure will embrace technology advances that support patient experience, staff experience, operational effectiveness and efficiency. The hospital will also feature unique lifestyle concepts from rooftop gardens and flexible outdoor spaces, and indoor common areas with amenities to benefit patients, families, and staff. Expected completion is fall of 2026.
Other affiliations for resident training include the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, which is fully integrated into the adult service, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh opened a completely new state-of-the-art facility in the Lawrenceville area of Pittsburgh in May of 2009. The 10-acre, 1.5 million square foot facility features breakthrough technology and enhanced research facilities.
Additional UPMC affiliations have extended the staff neurosurgical care to several area hospitals including UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Passavant, UPMC Mercy, and UPMC St. Margaret in the Pittsburgh area, and other hospitals throughout the state including UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., and UPMC Altoona and UPMC Pinnacle in central Pennsylvania.
Laboratory facilities for the department are located within the medical school and the adjacent, dedicated research towers. Lab facilities here offer the latest in medical research technology presenting staff and residents with the opportunity to perfect and develop surgical skills and treatment options. Cancer research and care is given central focus at UPMC's dedicated Hillman Cancer Center in Shadyside.
The department administrative offices are located on the 4th and 5th floor of UPMC Presbyterian and comprise more than 15,000 square foot of office space. The suite houses dozens of faculty and resident offices, several multi-media conference rooms, numerous examination rooms, and a small exercise facility for faculty, residents and staff.
