Patient Support Groups

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery is dedicated to providing exceptional care for our patients, both in and out of the hospital. To help fulfill this commitment, the department offers the following support groups so patients can better deal with their condition, asking questions from experts in the field and learning from others who may have traveled the same path.

Western Pennsylvania Brain Aneurysm and AVM Support Group

The Western Pennsylvania Brain Aneurysm and AVM Support Group has been specifically designed to combine education about aneurysms and AVMs, as well as provide a look into the different aspects of care. Monthly speakers in such fields as neuropsychology, research, neurological surgery, stroke and critical care medicine allow patients and families to ask questions regarding their diagnosis and deficits—both emotional and physical. After each speaker, the floor is open to anyone who would like to share their concerns, fears, hopes, triumphs and effective coping mechanisms.

Spine and Scoliosis Patient Support Group

The Spine and Scoliosis Patient Support Group furnishes a supportive and educational environment for patients and their families facing the challenges brought on by spinal disorders. The support group is meticulously structured to blend educational insights about spine health and scoliosis with exploring various care dimensions. Quarterly gatherings featuring specialists from neurosurgery, orthopedics, physical therapy, pain management, psychiatry, and community partners, enabling patients and their loved ones to inquire about their conditions and their psychological and physical implications.
